WebReview Magazine
(1995-1996)
WebReview was Songline Studios' first publication.
I developed the graphic identity, produced most of the graphics
for the weekly magazine, and managed a group of freelancers to
handle the rest.
At the time, the design of WebReview was revolutionary
(compare it to the naive look of GNN). However, it also seems
naive now that five years have passed. I would never design a
site in this way again: with literal metaphors, full-screen graphics,
and large amounts of text stuck in images. But it's interesting
to see how web design conventions have changed over the years.
We are still in the process of figuring it all out.
WebReview is still in publication, however, it now
sports an entirely new appearance (and a new owner, Miller Freeman).
It is a great resource for web developers & designers.

Cover-- "Virtual Reality
Like a print magazine, the image on the "cover" of WebReview
changed each week while the masthead stayed in place. There
was also space to promote individual articles.
You could navigate through the magazine by jumping to topic
sections (using the tabs on the side) or by flipping through
one page at a time (using the turned corner in the upper-right).

Story -- "Virtual Reality"
Each article had its own distinct look, but was consistent
with the overall style of the site. This is the cover story
that went with the cover featured above.

Story -- "Hanging Your Shingle"
This is an example of a typical 1-page article. I gave
each headline a special design and broke up the long scroll
of text with clip-art and graphic headlines.

Story -- "Webula"
I had a great time designing the graphics to fit the
mood of this Halloween feature, written by Dave Sims. The
complete article is included here for your entertainment.
