Logo/Identity |
I've done quite a lot of work
over the years creating logos and developing rules for their use.
See the Style Guides section
of this site for information on corporate identity documentation.

larger samples and applications. (Note, samples will open in a
separate window.)

FirstLever (2004)
The mark in this logo
for a start-up web consulting firm refers to the word "lever,"
per the client's request.

Signature
Pools Chicago (2004)
After many iterations, I
created a system of two logos, combining the preferences
of two owners with conflicting tastes. One insisted that the
word "signature" be in a script font. The mark is an abstracted
pool shown in perspective. |

SomeMusic
(2003)
This logo system is for a
company that composes and produces soundtrack music for commercials
and movies. (www.somemusic.net) |

Suzy
Crosby (2002)
The owners of this luxury
cosmetics and skin care shop wanted an identity that was retro
and sophisticated. They also wanted kelly green, which I had
never worked with before, but I ended up loving. |

Clementine
(2002)
I developed this simple logo
for a hip clothing shop in Providence's up and coming West
End. It looks great in the shop window.

| Book Design |
I spent the first six years of my career working primarily
as a book designer, first for Little, Brown & Co. where
I designed dozens of law and medical books, then for O'Reilly
& Associates, Inc. Following are recent freelance projects
and some of the more lively book projects I had the opportunity
to design while at O'Reilly.

Documenting
Software Architectures
Author:
Clements | Client: Addison Wesley
(trim size: 6.25" x 9.25")
The elaborate
system of sidebars (and sidebars in sidebars) made this
book a real design challenge, not to mention the fact that
the author insisted that the book have a "bird wing"
theme. Fortunately, it all worked out in the end. |
 |
Smileys
(trim size: 4.25" x
7")
This is a fun little book that contains
hundreds of unique "emoticons" or "smileys."
My job was to take boring lists of keystrokes and words
and turn them into something that was fun to look at and
read. |
 |
Love
Your Job
(trim size:
7" x 9.25")
This book is a departure from O'Reilly's typical technical
publishing space. I had fun coming up with a design and
illustration style that fit the "blue-sky thinking"
attitude of the writing. |
 |
Travelers
Tales
(trim size:
6" x 9")
I think I'm the most proud of this book
design. Travelers' Tales books are collections of short
stories regarding travel in a particular country. I gave
the book a "literary" look that is different
from typical travel books. The use of ink drawings instead
of photographs added to the storybook atmosphere. Each
book had its own logo that was relevant to its country
(for instance, corn for Mexico). I also acted as production
manager of the first five books in this series. |
